Modeling Complex Natural Phenomena with the libAuToti Cellular Automata Library: An example of Application to Lava Flows Simulation

چکیده
Cellular Automata, a computational science branch used for the modeling and simulation of complex systems, are parallel computing models which are continuously gaining attention from the Scientific Community for their potentiality and efficiency. This work presents the application of libAuToti, an open-source parallel library for implementing models based on the Cellular Automata approach, on the simulation of lava flows as defined by the SCIARA model. The library permits a straightforward and simple implementation of Macroscopic Cellular Automata models, which are appropriate for the simulation of spatial extended dynamical systems. Experiments have demonstrated the elevated computational efficiency of the library, executed both on an HPC machine and a standard multi-core PC, confirming the reliability of the library and goodness of simulation results. Eventually, future improvements and possible applications are discussed at the end of the paper.

Complex Systems Modeling with Cellular Automata and Genetic Algorithms: An Application to Lava Flows
Cellular Automata are parallel computational models which are capable to give rise to heterogeneous emergent behaviors notwithstanding simple local rules of evolution. In this review paper, a methodology for modeling complex natural systems through Macroscopic Cellular Automata is presented and applied to lava flow simulation. In particular, the 2001 Mt. Etna volcano Nicolosi (Italy) case study...
متن کاملAn extended notion of Cellular Automata for surface flows modelling
Cellular Automata (CA) represent an alternative approach to differential equations to model and simulate complex fluid dynamical systems, whose evolution depends on the local interactions of their constituent parts. A new notion of CA was developed by our research group Empedocles. It permitted to improve significantly an empirical method for modelling macroscopic phenomena, concerning surface ...
متن کاملApplication Context of the SCIDDICA Model Family for Simulations of Flow-Like Landslides
Cellular Automata (CA) are parallel computing models whose evolution is governed by purely local laws. The global dynamics of complex systems simulated by means of CA emerges from the local interactions of their elementary components. Some macroscopic natural phenomena are included in the class of such complex systems. Among them, of particular interest are several W\SHVRI³VXUIDFHIORZV´ where t...
متن کاملLava flows impact prediction at Mount Etna by Cellular Automata
Millions of people live either on or in the surrounding areas of about six hundred worldwide volcanoes, which are known to be capable of renewed activity. The individuation of those areas that are more likely to be interested by new events is of fundamental relevance for mitigating possible consequences, both in terms of loss of human lives and material properties. Here we show a new methodolog...
متن کاملLava Invasion Susceptibility Hazard Mapping Through Cellular Automata
This work deals with a new methodology for the definition of volcanic susceptibly hazard maps through Cellular Automata and Genetic Algorithms. Specifically, the paper describes the proposed approach and presents the first results to the SouthEastern flank of Mt. Etna (Sicily, Italy). In particular, resulting hazard maps are characterized by a high degree of detail and allow for a punctual and...
